Hard times

The journey on the Gulf continued, but was not as warm and nice as Renata had expected. It even gave her a couple of lessons.

It started with an Artic Front that hit the Gulf in the beginning of December. This was probably the last thing that she had expected and she was not prepared for it. Mistake number one, she left her hat and gloves in San Diego.

In the night the temperature got way below the freezing point and during the day it was freezing because of the strong wind. Drastic situation needs drastic action. A pair of socks and two dry bags served as gloves and a towel as a cover for her ears under the cap.

One night she was invited to stay with Samantha in Sargent. She tied up the boat at the dock to the house. The second mistake, Renata didn't close her hatches properly and the boat was under water when she waked up in the morning. Everything was wet. All chargers, food, stove….Everything! Mistake number three. She did also forget to secure her paddle, so it was gone…floated away.

The bad weather continued and there was even a storm with tornado warnings. She got catch in the middle of it. Stranded on a muddy island with the water rising and the waves splashing further and further in she had no place to go…and no other choice than to get back out in the terrible conditions and try and make it to the harbor of Galveston.

Arriving to Port Arthur was an awakening. She knows that she was entering an area that was damage by the season's hurricane attacks. But it is one thing on television and another thing to be there and see it. Due to the restrictions of using tents and that mostly all motels and hotels was full; it was really hard to find a place to stay. Finally she got the last room at a hotel.

Speaking with the US Coast Guard made her realize that she would have a hard time to continue on the route that was planned. To be as safe as possible Renata decided to try to pass thru the effected area as quickly as possible and bike thru Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
