Kandersteg is one of the very few villages in the Bernese Oberland which has preserved its original, typical Swiss character. Set in beautiful natural surroundings the unspoilt countryside enchants visitors in both summer and winter.
In summer
Sporting Kandersteg has a wide range of options to offer active guests. Kandersteg is surrounded by a vast network of paths for both casual and more serious walkers. There are endless places to explore. The well signposted routes will take you over passes, alongside deep blue rivers and mountain lakes, through pastures and even up to the glaciers. Every walk provides unique and breathtaking views. The more adventurous can obtain the services of an experienced guide, who will take you four thousand metres up into the ice and snow. There you can walk in the silent Alpine world of the high mountains and see the Bernese Oberland in all its beauty.
The heated open air swimming-pool with its non-swimmers’ pool, the children’s paddling pool and the large playground is ideal for your family. At the ice hall, you can learn or practise the patient skills of curling. In summer, the ice rink is turned into tennis and badminton courts.
The open and free nature of the countryside can be explored on a horse back, fishermen can catch trout in the clear rivers or lakes. There are a number of well-kept tennis courts and there is a fitness course in the cool woods of Oeschiwald. For the less energetic, there is minigolf or take part at an unforgettable guided botanical walks which reveal the splendour of the Alpine flora. In the mountains at Allmenalp, guests will be able to watch mountain cheese being made in the same, traditional way as it has been for centuries.
In summer ski jumping champions can be seen training on the three artificial ski jumps. This is an amazing spectacle, even for those who have witnessed it before!
Kandersteg is an ideal centre for excursions by train, coach or car. To the south are the Valais and Italy; to the north are Lake Thun, Interlaken, Bern, Lucerne and many other places of interest. In the village of Kandersteg itself there are folklore evenings, slide shows on local history, theatre and films in the congress hall or classical concerts in the old church. One event that is always impressive and not to be missed, is the local sunset, glowing on the glaciers and mountains with their ‘eternal’ snow.
In winter
There are excellent facilities for cross country skiers in Kandersteg. Nine trails with a total length of 75 km are spread around the village. They are of varying degrees of difficulty and all are set in beautiful winter scenery. One particular trail is illuminated at night and this attracts many spectators as well as skiers.
Guests also appreciate the guided walks on cross country skis which take place in the evening, illuminated by torchlight. A special feature of this is a stop at a romantic mountain hut to warm up with a glass of “Glühwein”.
Kandersteg is an Alpine skiing paradise for beginners and families. The first-class Swiss ski school organises classes for children and adults, as well as private lessons. Very good weekly arrangements are available for cable cars, chairs and ski lifts. In only 40 minutes, good skiers can reach the neighbouring Lauchernalp ski region. A special lift ticket includes the Kandersteg and Lauchernalp ski regions as well as train and bus transport.
Non-skiers are also well catered in Kandersteg. There are lots of alternatives: panoramic walks, guided snow-shoe-walks, a toboggan run (illuminated at night), horse drawn sledge-rides and many other excursions, or you can simply have a reclining chair on one of the sun-bathing terraces.
Kandersteg is well known in curling ‘circles’. National and international competitions take place all year round. Regular fun curling competitions are organised for guests and visitors, with special attention being given to beginners. In the ice hall, skating for pleasure or sport is great fun. Skates can be hired there.
Horse riding in the snow is a popular attraction. Another attraction is the signed snow-shoe-trail up on Sunnbühl.
Kandersteg is well known as one of the most popular Ice-Climbing Centres in the Alps.
Guided ski tours are available to the higher Alpine regions. Experienced mountain guides will lead you to the famous peaks around Kandersteg.
The children are not forgotten of course. A weekly down hill race in which each child receives a medal creates a lot of fun and excitement.
National and international ski-jumping competitions and cross country ski races, and public cross country competitions are all part of the winter calendar.
Kandersteg can rightly claim to possess virtually all the facilities that any discerning winter visitor can dream of.
Entertainment
Several hotels arrange special evenings of entertainment for their guests. Everywhere, the friendly atmosphere encourages spontaneous get together in the cosy restaurants and bars.
On weekends throughout the year, local and foreign guests have the opportunity to meet at the many village’s activities, sporting occasions and local festivities.
